Home Care
Your pet will be discharged after surgery with written instructions which will be explained to you in detail by one of our staff. At this time we will answer any questions and assist with ideas to ensure your pet has an uneventful recovery.
Most of our orthopedic cases will need to be strictly confined in a pet carrier or small space 24 hours a day for the initial 4-6 weeks after surgery. Often we will dispense a sedative called Acepromazine, that is an oral tranquilizer to assist in keeping your pet calm during this confinement period. Dogs must be walked outside on a leash only for bathroom breaks.
Any other medication(s) needed for home use such as antibiotics and/or antiinflammatories will be dispensed upon discharge of your pet.
If you have any questions about home care, please call our office during office hours and one of our staff will be happy to assist you. If the question requires input by one of our surgeons, they will be consulted and the advice relayed to you by a staff member. If your question comes up after hours, you may leave a message on our answering machine or send an email, either of which will receive a response from our staff the next business day. If you have an emergency or urgent concern, you may wish to consult with your nearest emergency clinic.
